First, to those of you that don't know, I've been vegan for about a year and any time that someone finds out that I'm vegan (regardless of me bringing it up or not), I get people saying, "Oh I eat animals because 'blah blah blah blah.'" By this point, I've sadly heard every excuse and honestly, I don't care why anyone eats animals. I don't care if you eat animals. I just want to go on my business without having to end up in yelling matches about who is right and who is wrong because truthfully, NO ONE IS RIGHT (and I have much more things completely unrelated to veganism that I have to do). I respect EVERYONE'S lifestyles (though I might not like them)- and those who say I don't obviously don't realize (or seem to forget) that my husband is still an animal-eater (though he eats vegan food if he cooks for me or if I cook as opposed to eating his family's leftovers or if we eat out- in most places anyway) and I respect him most out of everyone on the planet.
The only thing that I personally want people to think about is why they eat animals. They don't have to tell me. They don't have to talk to me. I just want them to think. That's all. Often, I hear "I eat it just because I enjoy it," but enjoying the taste of something is completely irrelevant. Dogs love chocolate, but it's incredibly dangerous for their health. My brother loves ice cream and vegetables, but he's allergic to most fruits, veggies and dairy if they are cooked wrong (same with eggs and a slew of other things like nuts). I used to LOVE spicy chicken sandwiches from Wendy's and greasy, over-processed chicken nuggets, but I got over that hump to better suit my animal rights interests and my health.
Taste is irrelevant and I don't see my choice to become vegan as a sacrifice (because honestly, the animal products that I did like were always the animal products that had no resemblance to animals at all).
Anyway, back to the real issue. There was a poll that one of my friends started on Facebook that said, "Are you vegan? If yes, why?"
The answers to choose from were originally:
Yes, because I am an environmentalist Yes, because I love animals Yes, for my health Yes, (for something else that I forget) No
Then the next day, I see that there were 7 more added results, one of which was "No, but not because I don't love animals. They taste good."
And one (or several of my other friends, as well- not sure, didn't care) of my friends chose that response. I rolled my eyes because I'm so tired of hearing that excuse from the world and made my status, "If I said that I eat people because they taste good, that makes it okay, right?"
And it started a shit storm. The friend that I noticed responded in the poll responded defensively to my status about how eating your own species is bad (which it's only bad if you eat the brain, spinal cord, and sick people- I've done research)... which was fine and I didn't really care about arguing about cannibalism, but then more people chimed in and it started going toward veganism and everyone started hitting nearly every point that is on the Defensive Omnivore Bingo card (which is a joke that vegans made because we get the SAME ARGUMENTS. ALL. THE. TIME. So because of this, I started actually playing Bingo in Photoshop for fun because I had no idea that my joking status that I created out of annoyance was going to turn into this garbage. A vegan friend of mine was responding to the Animal Eater Crusade and I was just sitting back and watching, not taking it seriously at all because I didn't even start it seriously. Half of the comments above this trash weren't serious and several of them knew that I was just trolling! They even straight out say it! But other people were saying I was being disrespectful and I even said, "I don't disrespect your lifestyle. I just want you to think about it." Because the original people that were arguing with me were the same people whose parents told them back in high school to not support me in boycotting animal testing because "if it wasn't for animal testing, my children wouldn't be alive." So of course, the way we did things in the PAST is exactly why we should keep doing them in the future despite the fact that we have better technology and ways of testing now... Argh.
Anyway, do people read the comments above? No. They just want to feed their egos and write books about why they're right and everyone else is wrong. So I just played BINGO and was on a business call at the same time, getting hired to be a make up artist for a music video. I later went to the store to get groceries for dinner last night (which according to one of my friends, vegan groceries are expensive and cost a lot more than an animal-eaters diet... and you also have to have the "budget" for it... yet somehow, I bought several meals for under $2.00 per serving- and for me, one serving can sometimes end up being multiple meals, and also, if you recall, I'M PRACTICALLY COUCH SURFING and no one pays for my food unless I visit my parents...). When I cam back home, I noticed the debates had stopped, so I posted my completed BINGO card.
My one friend made a status that said, "Looks like someone won the "snotty twep to ignore" BINGO, and I actually thought he wasn't being serious... so I just responded, "Aww... don't be mad."
But then he responded in great length that I should take people seriously if I want to be treated seriously... that I have friends that respect my lifestyle and choices and I should try to deserve that instead of trying to make them mad. I was actually pretty stunned because I thought he would take it as a joke and maybe chuckle at himself for realizing he hit nearly every single point on the card.
Maybe it was a little insensitive and I apologized for offending him... but really? It was just all in fun and I had no idea so many people were going to take it so seriously... and he got to debate, which he really likes to do. Also, he KNOWS my personality and in the past has called me an "evil little cat" so why in the fuck would what I did surprise him?
I don't know if the other people are upset and I don't really care. They were my friends in high school, not now, and I have no ties to them otherwise.
Argh. tl;dr: People are dumb and they drive me crazy.
Also, people should just hide my posts or remove me from their friends instead of telling me to stop posting things that offend them. It's not my fault that you took the bait and you turned it so serious. I don't even troll often, but I do post vegan-related things and stuff that interests me.. and I share the articles and film reviews that I write for a veg website (among a ton of other things completely unrelated to veganism). So I'm not really seeing why people think I'm being preachy if I'm just sharing stuff that I think is interesting... I don't get offended when my friends post meaty recipes on their Facebooks. WTF?
Also, please don't make this into another "you shouldn't be vegan blah blah blah" thread or a "I'm a meat-eater because blah blah blah thread." I really don't care.
Sorry about writing a book.
