I have a major problem with men assigning what he deems "appropriate" characteristics to my gender. I won this scholars' LSAT prep course with a particular law firm, and he was giving me his advice on how I should carry myself in order to win their favor and possibly a position with the firm in the future.
I asked him if he would lend the same advice to a man.
He said, "It depends."

I thought my head would blow.

Wtf? Because I'm a woman, I cannot have opinions? I have to be quiet? I have to accommodate and complement your masculinity with a gentle, unassuming, and non-threatening presence?

No, I'm not over-reacting. This man told me that I would be fired at any law firm if I were to refute an opinion that was mentioned solely to insult me. He said "People who commit suicide are weak and stupid." I have an extensive history with suicide and depression, and he knows it; I took offense [naturally] and vehemently argued against that view. There are such numerous errors in that statement that I can hardly imagine where to start. If some idiot got in my face and said such a ridiculous thing, I'd say what I said all over again. But, in his view, I should not do so because I should be "woman-like" (or is it "demure"?)


First, quoted for posterity. Secondly, wtf, this has nothing to do with "the women's lib thing." But, of course, I forgot; anything that involves a woman's dissent must be some sort of movement. It couldn't just be that, y'know, I took offense at a man telling me that I - a woman - should not talk back lest I lose my job.

Are you so short-sighted that you honestly cannot see why this would offend? Seriously, I don't mean to sound like a biotch, but I have seen some of your posts in the past, and you struck me as wiser than your present post would indicate.

There is nothing wrong with being a strong woman. It often gets you further in life than being a meek little plain girl. Shit, I doubt anyone can deny that strength is an attractive quality. Take Julie Newman, Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, and many other strong women. It doesnt have to be a fucking liberation or bra burning contest. Seriously, I have to admit that for the most parts we have equal rights and often use them to our advantage. In this day in age it is fucking insane to think that we should sit idle when someone busts out the sexcist comments towards our gender.

uhh just a quick thought.......but ist this exactly the kind of situation HR(human recourses) are supposed to handle? it sounds like stereotyping(you are female) and purposelly provoking you with comments, and then saying you'll get fired if you speak up about it.

thats blackmail, harassment, or some other thing that should assuredly not be in todays workplace. seriously go the HR route and let them tear him a new asshole if they feel like you are in the right.

HR could handle it if he were not my on/off again SO.
The both of us are aspiring attorneys. He was telling me that, if I am to be a successful lawyer, I should not be so opinionated that I actually respond when men offend me. I must know my place; womanhood, for him, dictates that I only nod and smile at, and never upset, my male counterparts.

Do you know whether or not the firm holds the same views as him?
If it does you might just need to play the game to make the most out of your time there. Law's still an old boy's club so you'll need to just do the best you can within any archaic restrictions.

It is wise advice, but make be sure like he said whether or not the firm holds the same "standards".

I think everyone involved in a business should behave this way.
