I missed this story. I never heard about it in US news. Or it happened at a time when I was busy and not paying attention.

This was a really tragic story but not unheard of, nor does it happen to just "goths". Any "news" you gain from reading the Daily Mail really should be taken with a great, big, fat bag of salt.
This newspaper - along with the Sun - are responsible for tarnishing the names of anybody alternative particularly those who refuse to conform to the wishes and orders of our conservative society. Their agenda here was clearly to just generate more bad press for the "chav" subculture; not to raise awareness in support for the gothic community. They sort of just pick and choose sides to suit their needs.
