I read that they were originally going to plug it up with garbage... so I'm assuming that didn't work, heh.... Or did everyone object to putting more trash in the sea?

I heard that too and wasn't sure how that would seriously work... I know it's to clog it but I'd think at some point the pressure of the oil trying to get out would just push all the garbage back out.
