ok dont know who cares about this sort of thing, but a week or so ago there was a show on the science channel about Europa "the frozen moon". basically they talked about the moon, the existence of a possible ocean, how the moons ocean tides could be affected by jupiters gravity and so on. now the one idea they had for actually probing the ice and surveying what is down there is basically a small torpedo with heated coils composing the copper head.
now my question to you is this. that ice is about 20 miles thick if i remember correctly and harder that stainless. my opinion is something might be needed with more punch than a space heater.
-magnesium sulfate bearings set in not quite star shape with a larger charge set in the middle. keep doing this for some time youd make some progress. the advantage of this idea is that the superheated walls of the ice would freeze in space, allowing for an elevator installation to be set up with reinforced deep sea submersibles (unmanned) like what we use in our oceans now, ready at an air lock set at a predetermined depth above the oceans surface.
-and a personal but unorthodox favorite, small nuclear detonations set so the blast is only directed downwards or in a craterical shape. hey got hard shit to break, need a big hammer eh??
anyway just wanted to see if anyone else has any ideas on this.
P.S.- i saw rens post about the hadron accelerator, and it had made me think of an idea i previously had. using particle accelerators to isolate heavy particles and eject them out of an accelerator at a faster speed, because in my theory the heavier the particle being forced away from the object it is being shot out of the greater the opposing force (THRUST). the other part of this idea was to find a way to give these particles a charge if possible, so that upon exit, they would be hit with an opposing charge thus increasing the thrust even more. now my roommate who i talked to about this said, thats basically an ion drive that i was describing. "ION DRIVE?" as in T.I.E. (twin. ion. engines.) fighters out of star wars??? i didnt know we had that kind of shit. the only problem he said with them right now are they take a long time to accelerate. (OH YEA, THIS IDEA IS BASICALLY AN IDEA FOR AN F.T.L. ENGINE)
ok people my ideas need sounding boards. whos full of shit? me or my roomie. tell why, or a better method than what i described.
