I'm pretty sure our sun is not massive enough to supernova

Someday you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky

We'll be living in space by then.

That's an interesting idea. We can't even put three guys on a space station without the thing breaking down every two months and requiring parts from the space administrations on earth.

How, exactly, are we going to put the entire population into space?

The first step is privatized space exploration. NASA is ineffective, as well as almost all other countries government run space programs. Once people start exploring space on their own, the move to space will not be far behind.

Space isn't owned by anyone. Hell, it's already started. There are companies that will take you into sub orbit! For a huge fee, but eventually, it will decrease to a level that the average joe could at least go once in their life.

Probably not in our lifetime, but I would say easily in the next 200 years.

Whoops - as soon as you introduce the profit motive, you're in trouble.

Other questions include - what, exactly, are we going to do in space? Find somewhere else to live, or just fly around all day? How many people can be sustained in this way? As I said, at the moment we don't seem to be able to manage three.

I agree, at the moment. But we have so damn long to venture out from this planet. Technology is advancing at a faster and faster rate. I mean, just image where we were 50 years ago. Those people back then couldn't possibly have imagined all the little gizmos we'd have today. What you image we will have in 50 years from now will be piddly things compared to what will actually be.

So yeah, I suspect in about 200 years, we'll have privatized space programs. I would say in less than a thousand years we will see our first colony on the moon, and who knows from there.

That is, of course, if we don't kill each other off before then.

Well we could destroy ourselves any time now and haven't. I don't think that most humans are inclined to do that. Even the stupid ones. I think we have gotten less violent as a society.

And technology doesn't just increase it builds upon itself exponentially. Wait until we start getting the benifits of unlocking the genome and nanotech.

I wonder what the scientists have in mind for food sources in space if earth is gone.

Hopefully not Soylent green.

We gotta have pork and bisquits and gravy.
