CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly infections each year from a drug-resistant staph "superbug," the government reported Tuesday in its first overall estimate of invasive disease caused by the germ.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus can be carried by healthy people, living on the skin or in their noses.

Deaths tied to these infections may exceed those caused by AIDS, said one public health expert commenting on the new study. The report shows just how far one form of the staph germ has spread beyond its traditional hospital setting.

The overall incidence rate was about 32 invasive infections per 100,000 people. That's an "astounding" figure, said an editorial in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, which published the study.

Most drug-resistant staph cases are mild skin infections. But this study focused on invasive infections -- those that enter the bloodstream or destroy flesh and can turn deadly.

Researchers found that only about one-quarter involved hospitalized patients. However, more than half were in the health care system -- people who had recently had surgery or were on kidney dialysis, for example. Open wounds and exposure to medical equipment are major ways the bug spreads.

Back when I ran the kitchen at a nursing home I've saw some seriously old people come down with MERSA and by seriously old I mean in their late 80's and early 90's and they all lived. That's at an age where a good case of pneumonia can put them on the slab. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not at all saying that MERSA isn’t serious or deadly; hell when a resident was infected they were quarantined, used disposable eating utensils and plates and you had to wear full surgical gear when you came in contact with said resident. I also had the joy of traveling around to other facilities for various reasons and got to see how they all dealt with various situations and the survival rate was pretty damn good. I really think that a lot of this is just media sensationalism, that’s just my opinion.

MRSA Is Serious, and universal precautions should always be taken but our school system recently presented a statistic that you have a .00002% chance of dying from MRSA if you are an uninfected individual. Something's gonna punch your ticket one day, it's probably not going to be MRSA.

both of my daughters have antibiotic resistant staph, they have scars in the places the breakouts got really bad. my mother also has it and the breakouts happen to her mostly on her face...her last one looked like half her face was rotting off. my mother also has lupus though so her immune system is shot at controlling this, they are making her quit her job as a restraunt manager because of it.

Not to sound cruel, but if she has MERSA she has no business dealing with the public, especially in a food service job. I do wish her the best and a speedy recovery.
