Theory One:
Sleep paralysis is triggered by an ill-timed disconnection between the brain and the body. During REM sleep, the body "shuts down" and becomes disconnected from the brain as a whole. When the REM pattern is disturbed suddenly it takes a few minutes/seconds for the body to "reconnect" itself properly. Sleep paralysis may be brought on by stress or possibly sleep deprivation. A much higher percentage of sleep paralysis affects those who sleep on their back. It is said that changing sleep position can reduce the incidence of these nightmares. Also doctors suggest getting up and physically moving around after having an episode as several can occur in one night.

Theory Two:
Some say Sleep Paralysis is linked to Astral Projection which in general terms means "Out of body". Some believe while in REM sleep, the spirit or soul is able to leave the physical body. When the body awakens too soon and the spirit has not fully entered the body, the body becomes paralyzed. There are so many theories on this.

Honestly speaking, I would agree with theory #1 since it provides a valid scientific understanding. However, #2 is an interesting theory if you believe in that sort of thing.

hmm..
well, the 1st theory might describe just half of what ive been experiencing.
2nd does sound interesting and i do believe in spiritual whatevers for ive encountered several on my own.
just hard to believe that any spirit can really harm u, in this case leave u paralyzed.
which leaves me wondering, perhaps sleep paralysis can result in death (?) if the spirit doesnt fully re-enter the body...

i dunno, one thing for sure, i wont be sleeping on my back for a long time

No spirit is harming you; it's a matter of the soul being trapped between the astral plane and the physical body.
So in a sense the body is awake before the soul enters.
When the deep sleep stage ends suddenly and the body becomes alert, the soul has a harder time re-entering the body which causes the paralysis.
And this is your own soul or spirit... no one else's... so no harm is done. Because you wouldn't harm yourself right?
I have read many cases on sleep paralysis and have not found one yet that ended in death, so I don't believe you have to worry about that!

Are you sure you do not suffer from night terrors?
These can also be linked to sleep paralysis as well.
Night terrors can paralyze the body and make one believe they are literally living a nightmare. You may see things, eyes can be alert and open and sometimes you may have the inability to scream or speak.
Just another possibility...

in fact i do suffer from night terrors...
i just dont know if it was a dream or a ghost.
if i told this, just afraid maybe u guys wudnt believe me.

the first time was when i was sleeping under the covers, i felt someone sitting near my leg as if it was staring at me while i was sleeping. and i cudnt breathe or move for a while.

Second was rather scary. my end of the bed rattled. i seriously thought it was an earthquake, but i cudnt move a bit.
and i was half awake, i saw the lights from outside my window (which was facing my kitchen) at my apartment on. so i knew my housemate was up.
the bed rattled for 10 seconds, i think.
then it stopped. i saw it was around 7am, thought my visions was quite blur.
i think i passed out again.
then i heard a girls voice telling me to wake up. she kept on touching my face, my forehead.
it was really blurry, she had short black hair, but i cudnt see her face, still telling me to wake up.
i cudnt move a single muscle and it came harder n harder to breathe
she suddenly kissed me on the cheek, and the next think i knew she was gone.
looked at the clock and it was still around 7am.

i asked my housemate and she never came into my room that day.

its just freaky, man.
have u ever experienced it?

I never have personally but my brother suffered from them terribly.
He described many different horrific things. Wolves trying to eat him, a house caving in on him, dead people trying to claw him, etc;
There were so many I should have made a diary.
Some became pretty violent. It was like sleep walking but worse.
Then some he could do nothing. He would perhaps shake slightly, his eyes were wide open and they were very expressive so you knew SOMETHING was going on. He couldn't move or speak until the episode was over.
My cousin also suffered from them and always claimed he could speak to dead people and relatives in these episodes.
I found that in both cases the boys were next to impossible to wake up, even after shaking them and throwing cold water on their face. It was really quite scary to watch.

Or... Perhaps you may find yourself among some restless spirits at your place. That... I did have a problem with. I burnt sage daily to keep those pesky spirits from pestering me.

even if it dont cause death, it still is a scary experience

I've had several issues with night terrors and sleep paralysis, and mine seem to be serotonin related.

Odd that you mention sleep paralysis. I just had an episode the other night. I knew in my dream that I was asleep next to my boyfriend but could not manage to wake him up to wake me up. In my dream it wasnt exactly fear that was the major issue. It was the fact that I tried no matter what to wake myself up but it did not work. I was looking down at myself at one point and another I was myself.

I used to have amazing dreams as a teenager where I would often start out in my own house and float/fly. I would float above my body and know I was asleep and then go through the hall and out the door into another world. One instance that is vivid is me flying through ships that were in the sky.

Another time was me practicing flying with "fellow" vampires. In my dream I had made myself a vampire and was practicing taking off and hiding on walls. It is almost indescribable.

I've had bad ones too. Such as me going through a transformation. Almost being posessed and me screaming and hitting myself to wake up.

My dreams are far and few now, with little interest besides mundane frustrations projecting into my sub-conscious. I almost feel as if I am taking myself out of experience because I don't feel comfortable or that is just not my main concern anymore. I feel as if I am refusing to let go or lose control of myself.

Well like I said, its just odd to me that it should be brought up.

:eye roll: You certainly have done your homework Pyretta, i'm impressed.

excerpt from wikipedia
During REM sleep, the release of certain neurotransmitters is completely suppressed. As a result, motor neurons are not stimulated, a condition known as REM atonia. This prevents dreams from resulting in dangerous movements of the body.

Here is the full article to read at your reference
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream

You might be interested in a book called The Joke and it's relation to the unconcious by Freud, I believe that was the title. The work is a bridge so to speak from his research with dreams.

As for the unwanted spirits my friends taught me a few ways to deal with them indirectly. Fill a jar with water and screws (or was it nails?) and place it in front of your door so that the reflection from a lamp casts a reflection of the screws on the wall. Or close your eyes and look towards a light and follow the direction a dark shadow is pointing, or repeat the god or angel chant.

 My mother showed me this article one time on belief.net about driving and the motor stimulus affected by the normally dominant left hemisphere of the brain allowing the right hemisphere to drift. I've had those dreams where I thought I was screaming. I would wake up and ask anyone in the house if they heard anything, it is weird. I know a couple of people who talk in their sleep, it isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility that one could gain control of movements with lucid dreaming based upon this theory.

I also think it funny that this is mentioned. I've suffered from both night terrors and sleep paralysis though, tg, not often at the same time. In the night terrors, I'm usually being tortured. The instance I remember most vividly is where I was tied down and someone was running a flame over the sole of my left foot (I am wickedly afraid of fire). I could feel the burning sensation... I tried to scream, but it was silent (often my screams are silent for some reason). I woke up when I jerked so hard that I literally bounced up and hit the ground... HARD. I think sleep paralysis is meant to prevent stuff like that, but I'm grateful for the fact that I wasn't paralyzed.

The last instance I remember of night terror and sleep paralysis combining is when I thought of a joke involving God. It was something I'd never say Irl (I've an abiding respect for God and all deities and don't think they should be mocked). However, in the dream, I thought it was funny and I chuckled to myself and congratulated on telling myself a funny joke. Suddenly, a demonic voice said, in an eerily quiet voice, "Oh, so you think that's funny, do you?" And it was... oh man... The best I can describe it is that it was like I was slowly burning from the inside out. It was... Oh, I was dying. My eyes popped open and I could see my room in the pre-dawn light. I felt a presence just to my left. The voice was talking to me again in a language that wasn't English, but I could understand it. I don't remember what was said. I just kept thinking, "move! MOVE!" I had the urge to turn off my alarm clock, but I couldn't move. I could only move my eyes, which means I couldn't even look around my room fully (and certainly not to my left) to reassure myself that I was alone. I started to pray (in my mind). I could not speak. The fire was consuming me and I knew I was going to die, even though I could see no flames. Suddenly, I could move, the voice and presence disappeared and my body began to cool. It took quite a while for the feeling of burning to wear off completely. It took a while to convince myself it was a dream... It was sooo real. Oh and when I came completely awake, I looked around my room... in the pre-dawn light.

Yeah, I think I was sleeping on my back that night too. I read about this in depth and there are beliefs about certain ethnicities being affected more than others and also one gender versus the other. There are sayings about this in old folk lore, including the one of "a witch riding your back" and the like. Like I said, sometimes I have night terrors and sometimes, sleep paralysis, but thankfully, they rarely blend. Thus, if I have night terrors my body can jerk (and sometimes hurt itself) to wake me up and I can move. Also, if I wake up and can't move, I'm not being tortured and so even though it's still terrifying and I'm scared, I know I'm going to be okay. All I can say is develop a sleep routine, try to have set bedtimes and waking times, and try not to sleep on your back. Also, whatever you do, do NOT eat in the hour or so before going to bed, as this also contributes. Best of luck to ya and if they can't go away, I hope your terrors don't blend with your paralysis.
