I also think it funny that this is mentioned. I've suffered from both night terrors and sleep paralysis though, tg, not often at the same time. In the night terrors, I'm usually being tortured. The instance I remember most vividly is where I was tied down and someone was running a flame over the sole of my left foot (I am wickedly afraid of fire). I could feel the burning sensation... I tried to scream, but it was silent (often my screams are silent for some reason). I woke up when I jerked so hard that I literally bounced up and hit the ground... HARD. I think sleep paralysis is meant to prevent stuff like that, but I'm grateful for the fact that I wasn't paralyzed.
The last instance I remember of night terror and sleep paralysis combining is when I thought of a joke involving God. It was something I'd never say Irl (I've an abiding respect for God and all deities and don't think they should be mocked). However, in the dream, I thought it was funny and I chuckled to myself and congratulated on telling myself a funny joke. Suddenly, a demonic voice said, in an eerily quiet voice, "Oh, so you think that's funny, do you?" And it was... oh man... The best I can describe it is that it was like I was slowly burning from the inside out. It was... Oh, I was dying. My eyes popped open and I could see my room in the pre-dawn light. I felt a presence just to my left. The voice was talking to me again in a language that wasn't English, but I could understand it. I don't remember what was said. I just kept thinking, "move! MOVE!" I had the urge to turn off my alarm clock, but I couldn't move. I could only move my eyes, which means I couldn't even look around my room fully (and certainly not to my left) to reassure myself that I was alone. I started to pray (in my mind). I could not speak. The fire was consuming me and I knew I was going to die, even though I could see no flames. Suddenly, I could move, the voice and presence disappeared and my body began to cool. It took quite a while for the feeling of burning to wear off completely. It took a while to convince myself it was a dream... It was sooo real. Oh and when I came completely awake, I looked around my room... in the pre-dawn light.
Yeah, I think I was sleeping on my back that night too. I read about this in depth and there are beliefs about certain ethnicities being affected more than others and also one gender versus the other. There are sayings about this in old folk lore, including the one of "a witch riding your back" and the like. Like I said, sometimes I have night terrors and sometimes, sleep paralysis, but thankfully, they rarely blend. Thus, if I have night terrors my body can jerk (and sometimes hurt itself) to wake me up and I can move. Also, if I wake up and can't move, I'm not being tortured and so even though it's still terrifying and I'm scared, I know I'm going to be okay. All I can say is develop a sleep routine, try to have set bedtimes and waking times, and try not to sleep on your back. Also, whatever you do, do NOT eat in the hour or so before going to bed, as this also contributes. Best of luck to ya and if they can't go away, I hope your terrors don't blend with your paralysis.
